I am a sixty-year-old divorced dad with two children—Ellie (age thirteen) and Joe (age ten). I also have a case of neuropathy (age two). The kids live with their mom in Southern California. The neuropathy lives with me. Because I love my kids and want to share in their lives, I also live in Orange County. Because I don’t love my neuropathy, I eat little sugar. This all started when I began chatting on AOL with a woman from California. We became friends. Then we became good friends. Then very good friends. Very, very good friends. We got engaged. Then married. Had two great kids. So, of course, the next step was divorce. My family and friends live thousands of miles away in the Midwest, on the East Coast, or in Canada. So I am always seeking out people with whom I can share stories about my adventures as a dad. As a way of releasing my pent-up pride, when Ellie was six and Joe was three, I started writing down my anecdotes. By Ellie’s thirteenth birthday I had over 175 stories. But if we were to let go of this fond conviction, Bruno Latour asks, what would the world look like?
